High-FFA Acid Oil: Why Intertek Testing Matters for Biodiesel Producers

November 2026 4 min read Biofuel Guide

Crude acid oil is a waste-based feedstock used in biodiesel production through esterification. Its key characteristic is a high Free Fatty Acid (FFA) content. But for biodiesel producers, the real question is: How do you trust that the FFA level is what the supplier claims? The answer lies in independent laboratory testing.

1. What is FFA and Why Does It Matter?

Free Fatty Acids are present in waste cooking oils and animal fats. In biodiesel production, high FFA feedstocks require a two-step process (esterification followed by transesterification). If the FFA level is inconsistent, the entire production batch can fail.

Typical FFA ranges for crude acid oil are 30% to 70%. Suppliers should provide a detailed FFA profile for every batch.

2. RED III Compliance and Double-Counting

Under the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED III), waste-based feedstocks like acid oil can qualify for double-counting toward renewable energy targets. To claim this benefit, producers must prove the feedstock is genuinely waste-derived.

This is where independent verification becomes critical. A supplier without proper documentation can jeopardize your entire sustainability claim.

3. Intertek Testing: The Gold Standard

Intertek Caleb Brett is one of the most respected inspection and testing companies in the world. When a supplier claims "Intertek tested," it means:

  • Samples were taken independently, not by the supplier.
  • FFA, moisture, and impurity levels were analyzed in an accredited laboratory.
  • A Certificate of Quality was issued for the specific batch.

Always request the Intertek report before accepting a shipment.

4. Logistics: Flexitanks and ISO Tanks

Crude acid oil is typically shipped in:

  • Flexitanks: 20ft or 40ft containers with a flexible bladder inside — cost-effective for bulk volumes.
  • ISO Tanks: Reusable stainless steel tanks — suitable for higher-value shipments.
  • IBC totes: 1000-liter intermediate bulk containers — for smaller quantities.

MOQ is usually 22 tons (one flexitank).
