Antep Pistachios: Understanding Calibers and Aflatoxin Testing for EU Imports

November 2026 5 min read Food Quality Guide

Turkish Antep pistachios are prized globally for their intense aroma, deep green color, and high oil content. For international buyers, however, the two most critical factors are caliber grading and aflatoxin compliance. This guide explains both.

1. Pistachio Calibers Explained

Caliber refers to the number of nuts per ounce. A lower number means larger nuts. Common export grades are:

  • 26/28: Premium large size — used for luxury retail and gift packaging.
  • 28/30: Standard export grade — most common for confectionery and bakery industries.
  • 30/32: Smaller size — ideal for industrial processing and bulk buyers.

Kernels (shelled pistachios) are also graded. Baklava-grade kernels are the highest quality, followed by standard and industrial grades.

2. Aflatoxin: The Critical Compliance Issue

Aflatoxins are naturally occurring toxins produced by certain molds. The EU has some of the strictest aflatoxin limits in the world. Any shipment exceeding these limits will be rejected at the border.

Reputable Turkish exporters guarantee:

  • Aflatoxin-free certification — laboratory tested per batch.
  • Electronic color sorting — removes discolored or damaged nuts where mold can develop.
  • Moisture control — proper drying and storage prevent mold growth.

Always request the laboratory analysis report (Certificate of Analysis) before shipment.

3. Packaging Options

  • Bulk: 5kg or 10kg vacuum bags — for industrial buyers.
  • Retail: 500g or 1kg vacuum packs — for supermarket chains.
  • Custom packaging: Private label options available.

4. Export Certifications

For EU imports, you should verify that your supplier provides:

  • ISO 9001 and ISO 22000 — quality and food safety management.
  • HACCP — hazard analysis and critical control points.
  • Phytosanitary Certificate — issued by the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture.
  • Certificate of Origin — for customs clearance and tariff purposes.
