EN 1627 RC3 Steel Doors: What European Buyers Need to Know

November 2026 5 min read Construction Guide

Security is a top priority for residential and commercial construction projects in Europe. Steel entrance doors are increasingly specified for their durability, thermal insulation, and anti-burglary performance. For buyers, the key standard to understand is EN 1627.

1. What is EN 1627?

EN 1627 is the European standard for burglar-resistant building hardware. It defines six resistance classes (RC1 to RC6). For most residential and commercial applications, RC2 and RC3 are the relevant grades.

  • RC2: Basic protection against casual burglary attempts using simple tools.
  • RC3: Enhanced protection against forced entry using crowbars and screwdrivers. Suitable for high-security residential entrances, banks, and government buildings.

2. Key Construction Features of an RC3 Door

To achieve RC3 certification, a steel door must include:

  • Steel sheet thickness: Typically 1.2mm to 2.5mm electro-galvanized cold-rolled steel.
  • Multi-point locking: Monoblock or multi-point hook locking systems with hardened manganese drill-resistant casings.
  • Security claws: Heavy-duty steel claws that anchor into the reinforced door frame when closed.
  • Insulation: High-density rockwool or honeycomb core for thermal and acoustic performance.

3. Fire Resistance (EI30)

Many construction projects require both security and fire safety. An EI30 rating means the door can contain a fire for 30 minutes. This is often required for:

  • Apartment building corridors and stairwells.
  • Commercial and industrial fire exits.
  • Government and military facilities.

Look for CE marking and an EI30 certificate when specifying fire-rated steel doors.

4. Aesthetic and Weather Protection

Security does not have to mean industrial looks. Modern steel doors can be finished with:

  • Wood veneers: For residential projects requiring a warm, natural look.
  • Composite cladding: For modern commercial architecture.
  • PVC finishes: For coastal environments where salt resistance is important.

Double-layer compression rubber seals ensure wind, moisture, and dust do not penetrate the door.
