Turkish Baklava Export: A Complete Guide to Packaging, Shelf Life, and Logistics

November 2026 6 min read Food Export Guide

Turkish baklava is one of the most sought-after premium desserts in the global food trade. However, exporting it requires careful planning around packaging, cold-chain logistics, and shelf-life management. This guide covers the essential technical details that wholesale buyers must understand before placing an order from Türkiye.

1. Production Standards You Should Verify

Authentic Gaziantep baklava is protected by geographical indication (GI) status. Before signing a contract, confirm that the manufacturer uses:

  • 40 layers of hand-rolled phyllo dough — this is the traditional standard for premium quality.
  • Genuine clarified butter (sadeyağ) — not vegetable margarine.
  • First-harvest Antep pistachios — known for their deep green color and high oil content.
  • TSE and Halal certifications — essential for EU and Middle Eastern markets.

2. Packaging Options for Wholesale

Baklava is highly sensitive to moisture and temperature fluctuations. The most common export packaging formats are:

  • Vacuum-sealed boxes: 500g, 1kg, and 2kg sizes — ideal for extending shelf life during transit.
  • Nitrogen-flushed packaging: Reduces oxygen content to preserve freshness.
  • Private label: Custom box designs and branding for retailers and distributors.

For air freight, standard packaging is often sufficient. For sea freight, vacuum sealing is strongly recommended.

3. Shelf Life and Cold-Chain Requirements

Baklava must be stored at +4°C for fresh consumption or -18°C for frozen export. The shelf life is:

  • Fresh (at +4°C): 15 to 21 days.
  • Frozen (at -18°C): Up to 12 months.

Sea freight shipments must use reefers (refrigerated containers) with continuous temperature monitoring. Air freight is recommended for smaller orders where freshness is the priority.

4. Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ)

Turkish baklava exporters typically require:

  • Air freight: 1 pallet minimum.
  • Sea freight: 1 full container (20ft or 40ft).

Mixed containers (combining baklava with other Turkish desserts) are often accepted for first-time buyers.
